The article? Meh… but here is a great comment: “Britain or at least England, needs proper regional governments with enough local power to resist Westminster to a degree. A federal England like a federal Germany where the Landers have significant powers which weaken the centre but doesn’t incapacitate it. Give Scotland and Wales enhanced powers to same degree as the English regions need. Westminster can be reduced to just dealing with national and international issues with a much smaller parliament, instead of a parliament full of dead weight yes men like it now has.
The regional mayors are a tentative step to reinventing the wheel which was thrown out with the bathwater by Thatcher, the successful Metropolitan County Councils. Without proper regional government with real powers, discussing levelling up is utterly pointless.”
